The Nyangatom man pictured here is from south Sudan. The land of the Nyangatom is traditionally around Mount Naita, just north of the disputed Ilemi triangle, currently held by Kenya in both South Sudan and Ethiopia. Nyangatom tribe is neighbour to the Toposa. They are friends, but also to the Turkana. Though the Turkana are their enemies, the influence of that people can be seen, especially in the necklaces they are wearing (yellow and red coloured necklaces are typical Turkana). Men traditionally wear only a piece of cloth, Mainly the man have scarifications, some of these are only given to a men after he has killed a wild animal or an enemy. Ladies wear extensive collars made either from beads (glass or now plastic) or seeds. Their chin is often perforated and through the hole, they wear different kinds of jewelry. They have different leather skirts, embellished with metal or ostrich shell, according to age and marital status. The necklaces they wear can be made of beads but also of seeds. The Nyangatom (the name they call themselves), which means that they are having new guns, changing from their earlier self given name Nyam Etom (elephant eaters). Their society is clan based and organised according to a gaddaa (generation) system. They are pastoralists. |
